Choosing from hundreds of Lab names is one you can say comfortably, distinguish from your everyday cues, and use consistently. Luna, Charlie, Ruby, Finn, and Scout are easy starting ideas—but the right choice does not need to win a popularity contest.

This collection contains 330 distinct name ideas, grouped by style, coat color, and familiar naming preferences. The categories are suggestions, not rules about which sex or color is allowed to answer to a name.

Rover’s 2025 report lists Charlie and Luna as its leading US male and female dog names. That describes names in Rover’s dataset, not a census of all Labradors or proof that those names improve training.

The lists below are our editorial suggestions rather than a copied popularity ranking. Start with a shortlist and say each name aloud in the situations where you will actually use it: calling across a room, checking in at the veterinarian, and inviting the dog away from something interesting.

The last situation may require several practice runs.

How do you choose a name your dog can learn?

Choose something your household can say consistently and that is easy to distinguish from the dog’s cues and other pets’ names. One or two syllables can be convenient, but a longer name with a consistent short form can also work.

Avoid treating syllable count as a scientific guarantee of recall. The dog’s learning history matters more than whether the name fits a naming formula. “No” and a similar-sounding name can also become awkward in ordinary conversation.

Name ideaInspiration in this listPractical consideration
MapleA tree and warm autumn colorEasy everyday spelling
OnyxA dark gemstone associationDecide how everyone will pronounce it
RiverAn outdoor themeWorks without tying the dog to one coat color
CocoaA chocolate-color associationThe name is not a food recommendation
ScoutExploring and outdoor activityDoes not imply a particular working ability

These are inspiration notes, not claims about historical name meanings. Food-themed names are for calling the dog; chocolate, raisins, alcohol, and other unsafe foods are not suitable treats.

How do you teach a new name?

Begin in a quiet room. Say the name once, reward the dog for orienting toward you, and repeat in short enjoyable sessions. Gradually practice in different easy locations before expecting a response around major distractions.

Use the name to get attention, then give the relevant cue. Repeating it continuously while the dog ignores you teaches little. Our Labrador training guide explains how to build recall separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rename an adopted Lab?

Yes. A new name can be introduced through consistent, positive practice. Keep the process simple, give the dog time to adjust, and make sure household members use the same version.

Update identification and relevant records when needed. A new name should not come with an expectation that the dog instantly understands a whole new set of household rules.

What is a good name for a female or black Lab?

For a female Lab, names such as Ruby, Josie, and Willa offer different sounds without being difficult to use. For a black Lab, Onyx, Raven, and Cinder are coat-inspired options. A black dog can also be called Sunny; the dog is unlikely to file an objection.

If you are still choosing a puppy, read the Labrador breed guide and color guide before letting a name decide the dog. Health and household fit matter more than how well the introduction sounds.
