A Maine Coon name has to work on two very different creatures: the magnificent adult cat you imagine and the kitten currently trying to climb a laundry basket. Good names are easy to say, distinct from common commands or household names, and suited to a cat you may be calling for the next decade or more.

Current popularity data can provide a starting point without dictating your choice. Rover’s 2025 US data placed Luna first among female cat names and Milo first among male cat names. Those are genuinely popular; a Maine Coon does not need a rare name simply because the cat is unusually large.

How to choose a Maine Coon name

The best test is simple: say the name out loud several times. If it feels awkward by repetition number four, it will not become more convenient when you are calling a cat away from an open door.

Short names are often easy to use, but longer names can work perfectly when they have an obvious nickname. “Augustus” can become Gus; “Valkyrie” can become Val.

Match the cat, not just the breed

A giant male does not have to be Titan. A 20-pound Maine Coon named Pip has its own logic.

You can wait a few days after bringing a kitten home and see what fits. Coat color is obvious immediately; personality often takes longer to appear once the cat feels safe.

Avoid names that sound too similar

If another pet is called Milo, “Mila” may create confusion in daily use. The same applies to human household names and frequently used cues.

Choose sounds that are easy to distinguish.

Either works. Popular names such as Luna and Milo are popular because they are short, pleasant and easy to call. A less common name can be useful in multi-pet households or simply feel more personal.

This list is a collection of ideas, not a ranking of Maine-Coon-specific popularity. Public pet-name reports generally cover cats of all breeds.

Maine Coon name ideas by coat color

Color can make a good naming prompt without forcing you into a cliché.

  • Black: Onyx, Vesper, Salem, Jet and Raven work without needing the cat to behave mysteriously.
  • White: Frost, Pearl, Yuki and Alpine fit the coat rather than making claims about temperament.
  • Orange/red: Copper, Ginger, Saffron and Marmalade suit the color vocabulary.
  • Silver/gray: Sterling, Slate, Mercury and Mist connect naturally to the coat.
  • Brown tabby: Acorn, Chestnut, Mocha and Walnut play off warm earthy tones.

For the genetics behind those colors, see our Maine Coon colors guide.

FAQs

What are the most popular cat names right now?

In Rover’s 2025 US cat-name data, Luna was the most popular female name and Milo the most popular male name. Popularity changes over time and differs by dataset.

What is a good male Maine Coon name?

Atlas, Milo, Magnus, Winston, Bear, Odin and Jasper all fit different versions of the breed’s large, rugged look.

What is a good female Maine Coon name?

Freya, Luna, Astrid, Willow, Mabel, Juniper and Cleo are versatile options.

What are good names for a huge Maine Coon?

Atlas, Titan, Goliath, Bear, Thor, Samson and Everest lean into size without being hard to call.

Should I rename an adopted adult Maine Coon?

You can. Many cats adapt well to a new name, especially when it is paired consistently with food, play and positive attention. Keeping an existing name is also perfectly reasonable if it works.
