The Maine Coon cat tail is long, thickly furred and one of the breed’s most recognizable features. A Maine Coon is built long rather than round: a rectangular body, broad chest, square-looking muzzle, large ears, big tufted paws and a long flowing tail. Those features are part of the breed standard, but no single trait can prove that an unpedigreed cat is a Maine Coon.
That distinction matters. A fluffy cat with ear tufts may look convincing, while a pedigreed Maine Coon may have relatively modest tips. Breed identity comes from documented ancestry, not a checklist of dramatic features.
Maine Coon features at a glance
| Feature | Typical breed-standard description | Practical purpose or effect |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Long, muscular, rectangular | Gives the breed its substantial silhouette |
| Muzzle | Visibly square and blunt-ended | Distinguishes the head from more triangular forest breeds |
| Ears | Large, wide at the base, well furnished | Contributes to the alert, rugged look |
| Eyes | Large, expressive, wide set | Color varies with coat genetics |
| Paws | Large, round and well tufted | Fur between toes can help insulate feet |
| Tail | Long, broad at base, tapering, flowing coat | Adds balance and insulation when curled around the body |
| Coat | Heavy, shaggy, shorter on shoulders, longer on belly/britches | Weather-resistant look without an even-length coat |
Why is a Maine Coon Cat Tail so long?
The CFA standard calls for a tail that is long, wide at the base and tapering, with long flowing fur. In a well-proportioned cat, it visually balances the breed’s long rectangular body.
You will sometimes read that every Maine Coon’s tail must equal the exact body length. That is a useful visual shorthand, not a measuring rule in the current CFA standard. Individual proportions vary.
The heavy tail coat also has an obvious insulating benefit. A resting cat can curl the tail around its body, although it is better to describe that as useful anatomy than to claim the breed consciously evolved a built-in blanket.
Ear tufts, ear furnishings and “lynx tips”
Maine Coons have large ears with substantial hair inside the ear. That inner hair is usually called ear furnishing. Longer hairs projecting from the tips are often called lynx tips in everyday breed language.
The CFA standard asks for large, well-tufted ears but does not require cartoonishly long lynx tips. A Maine Coon can be perfectly recognizable without the extreme pointed tufts emphasized in some social-media photos.
What eye colors can Maine Coons have?
Maine Coon eyes can be shades of green, gold, green-gold or copper. White cats and cats with white may also have blue eyes or odd eyes, meaning the two eyes are different colors.
| Coat situation | Eye colors commonly allowed in the CFA standard |
|---|---|
| Most colors/patterns | Green, gold, green-gold, copper |
| Solid white | Blue, gold/copper, greenish tones or odd eyes depending on class |
| Cats with white | Blue or odd eyes may occur |
Eye color does not reliably tell you temperament, health or whether an unknown cat is purebred.
Can a Maine Coon have blue eyes?
Yes. Blue or odd eyes are associated especially with white coats or significant white spotting. A solid brown tabby Maine Coon with vivid blue eyes would be unusual enough to warrant checking the pedigree and registry color rules carefully.
Why are Maine Coon paws so big?
The breed standard describes large, round, well-tufted paws. The combination suits a large-bodied cat, and the toe furnishings provide insulation around the feet.
The popular “snowshoe paw” description makes intuitive sense for a breed associated with New England winters, but it should not be turned into a precise evolutionary claim. Modern breed standards describe the anatomy; they do not prove exactly why every feature arose.
How many toes should a Maine Coon have?
The standard foot has five toes on each front paw and four on each rear paw. Polydactyl Maine Coons have additional toes and are covered separately in our polydactyl Maine Coon guide.
What does a Maine Coon face look like?
The head is medium in width and slightly longer than it is wide. The muzzle should look square rather than sharply tapered, and the profile has a gentle concave curve instead of a straight line from forehead to nose.
That square muzzle is one of the easiest ways to distinguish a classic Maine Coon head from the strongly triangular outline expected in a Norwegian Forest Cat.
What is the Maine Coon coat structure like?
The coat is not meant to be the same length everywhere. It is shorter over the shoulders and longer along the sides, belly and hind-leg “britches,” with a frontal ruff considered desirable.
Texture should be silky enough to fall smoothly. Seasonal changes can make an individual look much fuller in winter than summer, which is why the same cat may appear almost like two different animals across the year.
Do Maine Coons have a double coat?
People often use “double coat” as a simple description, but registry wording focuses more on the heavy, shaggy, uneven-length coat and undercoat condition than on a single fixed coat formula. Coat density varies with season, genetics and environment.
Do Maine Coons have bobtails?
A naturally short tail is not a defining Maine Coon trait. The CFA standard calls for a long tail and disqualifies an abnormal or kinked tail.
A cat sold as a “bobtail Maine Coon” may be a mix, a cat with an unrelated tail mutation, or simply mislabeled. Pedigree records matter more than the sales description.
FAQs
What are Maine Coon ear tufts called?
Hair inside the ear is commonly called ear furnishing. The longer hairs extending from the ear tips are often called lynx tips.
Do all Maine Coons have ear tufts?
The breed standard favors well-tufted ears, but the amount and length of visible hair vary. Extreme lynx tips are not required for breed identity.
What color eyes do Maine Coons have?
Green, gold, green-gold and copper are common registry colors. Blue and odd eyes can occur particularly in white cats and cats with white.
Can physical features prove my cat is a Maine Coon?
No. Features can make Maine Coon ancestry plausible, but pedigree documentation is the reliable way to establish purebred status.
